Why Google signed a 22-year nuclear power deal

Google’s agreement with Finland’s Fortum shows what expanding AI infrastructure requires: electricity secured years before it is used.

Google has agreed to buy electricity from Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear plant in Finland for 22 years. Announced on 9 September 2026, the deal helps secure power for Google’s growing operations and gives Fortum revenue certainty to extend the plant’s working life.

Why does a tech company need a deal this long?

AI runs on servers, and servers need electricity. Adding data centres means planning for that demand well before new services reach customers.

The agreement forms part of Google’s energy plans in Finland. For Fortum, a customer committing to years of purchases helps justify spending on a plant expected to operate until 2050. Fortum says the contract supports both the lifetime extension and an increase in the plant’s output.

Google is buying electricity under a supply agreement; Fortum remains the plant operator.

What should people following Google take from it?

The announcement puts a date and a scale on a cost that is easy to overlook when judging AI products. Better software still needs somewhere to run, and infrastructure decisions can last much longer than a product cycle.

For investors following Google’s parent company, Alphabet, the question is how those long-term commitments translate into useful capacity. Watch how its data-centre expansion develops alongside the power supply, rather than treating a single agreement as a stock-price signal.

Google’s place in the MAG7X reserve

MAG7X is a BNB Chain token whose theme is the Magnificent Seven technology companies plus SpaceX. Its trading taxes fund a reserve that can buy supported tokenized stocks, including GOOGLon, the Google / Alphabet asset.

The reserve’s Google row shows two separate numbers: the stock tokens already held and the quantity it has funding to buy. Holders of the supported GOOGLon token on BNB Chain can use that second number to find a potential sale to the vault through Flap.
